World Oceans Day: Marine Advocates Speak on Major Threats
Posted on Jun 7th, 2010
What is the most pressing issue facing oceans today?
The way we feel about the ocean and the complexity of ways we depend on the ocean for our survival isn't reflected in the ways we live and treat it. Some of this is due to ignorance, and some due to greed. We don't live like we love the ocean, even though we SAY we love the ocean. Those who would sell you destructively caught or farmed shrimp, wasteful plastic, or offshore oil are well-funded. But sustainability isn't.
So, education is an important part of the solution. So is understanding the mind-ocean relationship better, what I call Oceanophilia. The field of NeuroConservation will continue to grow and provide new, useful tools and a better understanding of why we love, and in some cases fear, the sound, feel, smell, taste and sight of the ocean.
