How does the ocean make you feel? "The Blue Marble" is a journey following people whose lives have been radically changed by their connection to the ocean. Our goal is to engage audiences in ocean conservation efforts through the emotional resonance of transformative stories.
One of the main characters in "The Blue Marble" has dedicated his career to exploring the human relationship with the ocean. Fifteen years ago, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, while doing his graduate work in Baja California, co-founded Grupo Tortuguero, a collective of Mexican fishermen and their families (former poachers themselves who live along the 1000 mile coastline) to save endangered turtles. More recently, J. has launched Blue Mind to study what is happening to our brains when we engage with the ocean. “You go through life knowing that water makes you feel good, but it is not something you are allowed to talk about as a scientist.” Blue Mind is the nascent field of neuroconservation. J. hopes that if we realize how much the ocean nourishes our psychological well-being, we’ll be more inclined to protect it. He sees a deeper affinity to the ocean as a radical approach to conservation.
