The Walsingham Gallery, located in Newburyport, MA kicks off its “Blue Minded” Art Show April 8th, with Artist’s Reception on site from 6-9pm.
Newburyport, MA, The Walsingham Gallery announces the kick off it’s spring season with “Blue Minded”, a unique art exhibition inspired by the best-selling book, Blue Mind by scientist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols.
“Blue Minded- Where Art and Science Come Together” is the brainchild of gallery director, Kari Bernard. She has collaborated with the author and more than 30 artists to provide an innovative art installation that will resound with everyone who feels a deep connection to water, particularly those who live or vacation in coastal communities. This exhibit will be open to the public beginning with an artist’s reception at The Walsingham Gallery on April 8th from 6-9 pm. This event is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. This remarkable array of work will be on display through May 15th.
Dr. Nichols’ book, “Blue Mind” outlines a body of work that focuses on our relationship with water in all its forms through both a scientific and artistic lens. In an easy to understand format, he explains why we are drawn to the ocean, and how strengthening our relationship to water connects to our health and happiness.
“Preserving, protecting, and restoring our waters are tasks for many lifetimes, and sometimes the effort can seem overwhelming. But as long as we stay connected with all of the many, many blessings that water provides, and continue to keep that love in the forefront of our minds and hearts, as long as we remind ourselves to hope, then our stories will help connect others to water and encourage them to do what they can to help care for this beautiful Blue Marble world.” – Wallace J. Using this recurrent theme from Blue Mind as inspiration, The Walsingham Gallery explores this topic through a unique installation featuring original works of art by more than 30 artists with both local and national acclaim. These works feature a wide variety of styles and media and were carefully selected to highlight why viewing artistic interpretations of this essential resource –water- is so wildly popular. These masterful creations tap into the intersection of human experience where our senses fuse with emotion and memories of what we experience when we are in, near or on the water.
When we look at paintings or sculptures of water we are transported back to a time when we lived by or spent time near water - lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, oceans or even puddles - this reconnecting via art helps us to find our inner calm and joy.
Neuroscientists have discovered that the brain prefers the color blue above all others. A finely painted oceanscape can have a calming effect on the brain by tapping into our positive memories.

Each guest will receive one blue marble as part of Dr. Nichols' Blue Marbles Project and 5% of proceeds for the evening’s sales will benefit the Blue Mind Fund, a non-profit that gathers support for and gives grants to those on the frontline of reconnecting people to water.
