Top professional surfers, marine scientists, artists, musicians, farmers and friends – came together under the California stars last Fall for Sustainable Surf’s first annual, ‘Deep Blue Dinner’, to help us “talk story” with some of the best and brightest within surf culture, about how we can protect the health of our oceans by how we eat, live and surf.
This engaging video follows Greg Long as he first explores the setting and the ethos behind the Deep Blue Dinner at The Ecology Center with founder Evan Marks, Greg’s own passion for protecting his local home ground for waves, and finally, what it looks like when we all come together with the same “Deep Blue” intentions.
In short – we all came together to learn more about living a ‘Deep Blue Life’, as engaged and aware surfers who stoked about living an ocean-friendly lifestyle that can help protect our oceans, while building strong, healthy communities.
The dinner was created in partnership with The Ecology Center and was held at their beautiful historic farmstead in San Juan Capistrano, which is an award winning educational center that teaches hands-on environmental skills and solutions to the local community.
Big thanks to all of our speakers: Greg Long / Professional Big Wave surfer, Chris Malloy / Filmmaker and Professional surfer, Evan Marks / Founder, The Ecology Center, Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, President / Green Sports Alliance, Andy Stern, Founder / Smartfin, and Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, a world renowned marine biologist / ocean protector, and author of the New York Times best seller book – Blue Mind : The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do.
HUGE thanks to all of our partners and sponsors for making the evening possible – The Green Sports Alliance, Smart Fin, Chipotle, Finlandia Vodka, Patagonia Provisions, Kepner Farms, Suja Juice, New Belgium Brewing, Head High Wines, Thrive Farmers Coffee – and Chef Paul Buchanan from Primal Alchemy. And a very special thanks to our ambassador collaborators Greg Long and Chris Malloy.
Deep Blue Dinner – presented by Sustainable Surf in partnership with The Ecology Center
Join us under the California stars on Saturday, September 5th, for Sustainable Surf’s first annual, Deep Blue Dinner, featuring a delicious local and sustainably-sourced, Farm-to-Fork “tapas style” meal among friends – as we “talk story” with some of the best and brightest within surf culture, about how we can protect the health of our oceans by how we eat, live and surf.
Local chefs, organic farmers, fishermen, ranchers and vintners will be joining us to share the story of the food there’re bringing to us – and the evening will feature live music, inspiring art, ocean-friendly surfboards, and a whole lot more!
So come mix it up with Sustainable Surf Ambassadors, Greg Long, Chris Malloy, Alex Gray and others; as well as the winners of the 2014 Surfer Poll “Agent of Change’ award, Michael Stewart and Kevin Whilden of Sustainable Surf. This casual and enchanting evening of food, fun and friends will provide hands-on opportunities to explore what it means to live a Deep Blue Life – and how professional surfers could help engage and inspire the rest of the world to live a more ocean-friendly lifestyle too.
The evening will gather thought leaders with unique perspectives on sustainability for engaged conversations – including many of our board members like: Jim Moriarty, former CEO / Surfrider Foundation, Evan Marks, Executive Director / The Ecology Center, Dr. Margaret Leinen, Director / Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dr.
The dinner is being presented in partnership with The Ecology Center and is being held at their beautiful historic farmstead in San Juan Capistrano, which is an award winning educational center that teaches hands-on environmental skills and solutions to the local community. The staff of TEC will be leading tours around the grounds during the event to explore all their “sustainable living labs”, making it the perfect setting for an engaged conversation on how “sustainability” can once again become an integrated core value within surf culture – whether as an individual, or part of the surfing industry.
Big thanks to all of our partners and sponsors for making the evening possible – The Green Sports Alliance, Smart Fin, Chipotle, Finlandia Vodka, Patagonia Provisions, Kepner Farms, Suja Juice, New Belgium Brewing, Head High Wines, Thrive Farmers Coffee – and Chef Paul Buchanan from Primal Alchemy. And a very special thanks to our ambassador collaborators Greg Long and Chris Malloy.
We hope you can join us for this amazing evening!
