There's nothing like the sound of waves hitting the sand or the gentle patter of rain hitting the roof to soothe the soul. For those of us who want to hear the gentle sound of water on a more regular basis, it could be time to invest in a water feature.
Many studies have proclaimed the calming effect of water. In a recent article published in the Huffington Post, marine biologist Wallace J Nichols, says people have a "blue mind", where humans reach a "mildly meditative state" when near water.
Whether it's a simple shallow pool or a cascading fountain, there is no better way to bring life, energy and ambience into a garden than with water, says landscape designer Trudy Crerar, who often includes water features in her designs. "Water brings with it movement, creates light and shadows, a soothing space in the daytime and, with the skilful placement of light, an other-worldliness at night."
