A massive wave of national media coverage followed a press release issued by CEMDA this week regarding the lack of progress in addressing the high levels of loggerhead sea turtle bycatch in gill nets Baja California Sur, Mexico.
The community of researchers and conservation organizations remains committed to working with government agencies and fishing cooperatives to study and solve this problem, as we have for the past two decades.
There's no good reason the situation should have escalated to the point of sanctions, threat of embargo, or other coarse actions. Biologists and conservationists working together with fisherman and managers can and will solve this.
The press is in Spanish, so feel free to use Google Translate for a rough English translation.
