FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Neuroscientists, ocean advocates, educators, and adventurers meet to reconnect the human brain with our water planet.
CORNWALL, UNITED KINGDOM May 12, 2014 – The fourth annual Blue Mind Summit arrives on the Cornish coast June 10-12, 2014 to continue a fast-expanding conversation about the cognitive and emotional benefits of healthy oceans and waterways and the intersections between human neuroscience, psychology, and our blue planet.
Founded in 2010 by marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, a Research Associate at the California Academy of Sciences, the Blue Mind Summit has created interdisciplinary conversations about how healthy waters can influence and improve our lives. The summits combine cutting-edge neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, human biology, and ecosystem analysis with compelling personal stories from top athletes, leading scientists, military veterans, and gifted artists - each through a water or ocean lens.
This year’s summit coincides with the global launch of Dr. Nichols’ groundbreaking new book: Blue Mind, The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do. Representing the culmination of a decade of dedicated research, the book will be released by Little, Brown and Company - first in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand (coinciding with Blue Mind 4) and then in the US and Canada this July.
“The goal of Blue Mind is to initiate a new kind of conversation about the cognitive and emotional benefits of healthy waterways, oceans, and coasts around the world. When we stop to consider these ideas, it’s obvious stuff, but we’re putting cutting edge science behind the obvious,” says Dr. Nichols. "We want everyone to rethink their relationship to water and discover something deeper. Ultimately changing the way people understand water, forever"
The summit is being held this year on the Cornwall Coast and is co-hosted by the University of Exeter Medical School, a global leader in research related to Blue Mind. Topics to be explored during the Blue Mind 4 conversation include memory + creativity, risk + healing, real + virtual, and privacy + awe.
Invited speakers and presenters include artists, sailors, geologists, and researchers from five different countries and include Royal Geographical Society VP, Paul Rose and music by Alexi Murdoch.
Attendance is by invitation due to the limited size of the venue. Live stream registration is free and recommended in order to receive the final agenda prior to the summit and a copy of work products following.
Sponsors include University of Exeter Medical School, iResLab, Peak Teams, Ocean Revolution, LiVBLUE, The Ocean Foundation, and European Centre for Environment and Human Health
